NOW ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS!
Beginning counseling often brings important questions. The information below addresses some of the most common questions people ask when considering therapy. If you have additional questions, you are always welcome to reach out.
I have never talked to anyone about my concerns before. Does that mean something is wrong with me?
Not at all. Many people are used to handling challenges on their own and may feel uncertain about reaching out for support. Seeking counseling is not a sign of weakness. In many ways, it reflects self awareness and courage.
I provide a supportive space where you can explore your experiences, reflect on your strengths, and develop new perspectives and strategies for moving forward.
What if I feel nervous about starting counseling?
It is very common to feel uncertain or nervous about beginning counseling, especially if this is your first time speaking with a counselor.
Many people find that simply having a supportive and respectful space to talk about their experiences can be helpful. I move at a pace that feels comfortable for you, and there is no expectation to share more than you are ready to discuss.
How do I get started?
I offer a complimentary 15 minute consultation if you would like to ask questions, share what brings you in, and determine whether counseling may be a good fit.
If you choose to move forward, we can schedule your first appointment and begin the counseling process together.
What happens during the first appointment?
The first session, or the intake appointment, focuses on getting to know you and understanding what brings you to counseling. You will have the opportunity to share your concerns, discuss your goals, and ask any questions you may have.
This conversation helps guide the direction of our work together and determine how counseling may best support you.
How do I know if a counselor is a good fit for me?
Counseling is a collaborative process, and feeling comfortable with your counselor is an important part of the experience.
The consultation provides an opportunity for you to ask questions, learn about my approach, and decide whether the counseling relationship feels like a good fit for your needs.
What information is required before counseling begins with a minor?
Before beginning counseling services with a minor, I am required to review certain legal documents related to custody and decision making authority.
If a child is involved in a custody agreement, court order, or divorce decree, I will need a current copy of those documents prior to the start of counseling services. These documents help clarify who has the legal authority to consent to treatment and guide how I am able to provide services.
In most cases, consent from both legal guardians is required before counseling services can begin, unless legal documentation clearly indicates otherwise.
In accordance with state requirements, I will review and maintain these documents in the client’s record and follow the terms outlined within them throughout the counseling process.
If you have questions about what documents may be needed, I am happy to discuss this with you during the consultation process.
The Counseling Process
How is counseling different from talking with friends or family?
Support from friends and family can be incredibly valuable. Counseling offers something different.
As a licensed therapist, I am trained to help you explore concerns in a thoughtful and structured way. Counseling provides a confidential environment where you can speak openly without worrying about judgment, expectations, or the impact your experiences may have on personal relationships.
I can also help you develop practical strategies, new insights, and skills that support emotional well being and personal growth.
Why not just take medication instead of going to counseling?
Medication can be helpful for some individuals and may be recommended by a medical provider in certain situations. However, medication alone does not address every aspect of emotional or relational concerns.
In counseling, we work together to explore your experiences, understand patterns, and develop coping strategies that support long term growth and well being. In some situations, counseling and medication may be used together as part of a comprehensive approach to mental health.
I am not a licensed medical professional and am not authorized to perform medical procedures or to prescribe, dispense,or administer medications. If medication is something you are considering or currently using, it is important to work closely with your physician or prescribing provider to determine what is most appropriate for your needs.
What happens during a counseling session?
Each counseling experience is unique because you bring your own goals, experiences, and concerns.
During sessions, you will have the opportunity to talk openly while exploring thoughts, emotions, and patterns that may be influencing your life.
I use an integrative approach to counseling and may incorporate person centered therapy, cognitive behavioral strategies, Adlerian perspectives, Choice Theory, play therapy, or sandtray therapy depending on your needs.
How often will we meet?
Many people begin counseling with weekly sessions. Over time, sessions may become less frequent depending on your goals, progress, and needs.
We can discuss a schedule that works best for you and adjust it as needed.
How long does counseling usually take?
The length of counseling varies depending on your goals and circumstances. Some people seek short term support, while others choose to continue counseling for a longer period of time.
Your goals, level of engagement, and personal circumstances all influence the process.
How can I get the most out of counseling?
Counseling is most effective when you are actively engaged in the process.
Being open, reflective, and willing to explore your experiences honestly can support meaningful progress. Many people also find it helpful to reflect between sessions and consider how new insights may be applied in daily life.
Services and Specialties
What ages do you work with?
I provide counseling services for children ages 3 and older, adolescents, adults, couples, and families.
Services are tailored to meet your developmental and emotional needs. For younger children, I may incorporate approaches such as Child Centered Play Therapy and Humanistic Sandtray Therapy, which allow children to express thoughts and emotions through developmentally appropriate and creative experiences.
Do you offer counseling for educators and other helping professionals?
Yes. I have extensive experience working in education and understand the unique responsibilities and emotional demands that often accompany teaching, counseling, and other helping professions.
I provide a supportive space where you can reflect, process stress, and reconnect with your own well being.
Do parents participate in counseling for children?
Parents play an important role in the counseling process for children.
I may schedule parent consultations to discuss concerns, review progress, and explore ways to support your child at home. In some cases, parents may also participate in Child Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT).
Practical Information
Do you accept insurance?
No, I do not take insurance. I am a private pay provider and do not bill insurance directly.
However, if your insurance plan offers out of network benefits, I can provide a superbill upon request so that you may submit it directly to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Because insurance policies vary, I recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to learn more about your out of network mental health benefits.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is a document that includes the information many insurance companies require for out of network reimbursement. It typically lists the services provided, dates of service, and other required billing information.
If you would like to pursue possible reimbursement, I can provide a superbill upon request.
Please note that you are responsible for submitting the superbill directly to your insurance company. I do not file claims or communicate with insurance companies, and reimbursement cannot be guaranteed.
